10 Best Practices for Managing Your Intern

Before your interns start, make sure you have a plan in place. It will be difficult for you to find time to create meaningful projects and tasks for your intern to do after the program has already started. Make your intern feel like they are a part of the team from day one. They are nervous because they are joining a new company. In order to make your intern feel welcome, make yourself available when they ask a question. Interns often hesitate/reluctant to ask questions, believing they should already know the answers or can figure them out. Let them know that you welcome questions. Your intern should learn many new things during their time with you, so you are not only a resource, but also you must be ready to have training and teaching sessions for your interns.

It is important to set clear expectations and goals from the beginning.  Interns have a lot to get done in a short time, so it’s a must to get there fast. Goals are also important for measuring the success of your internship program. In order to stay engaged during the course of the internship, Check-ins are essential for your intern. It provides an opportunity for two-way communication and dialogue, and enables the intern to express any concerns. Regular and quality feedback is especially important for interns to succeed in internship experiences. The feedback will help them to improve their work and allow them to contribute and learn more effectively.

Internship programs are opportunities for you to serve as a mentor and mold an intern’s future career path. The experience is important for you and your intern because their experience will influence their career development and yours will help you develop resume-building management skills and learn more about the manager you would like to become. This is also a great opportunity for you to get the next generation of the workforce excited about your career.  You and your intern should discuss  the future career paths ahead of them and how internships like yours will help them achieve their goals. And lastly, an internship should be a fun learning experience.

My strategy is creating clear goals. Intern does not have enough time and we might not be able to have a close conversation because he might not be able to come to Japan due to the Coronavirus. So, I will set a goal that is both achievable and useful to us.
