DAILY DIARY_THINK IN ENGLISH CHALLENGE

The Japanese government has decided to release tritium-containing treated water from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant into the ocean. South Korea is strongly opposed to this. I do not think what Japan is trying to do is a good thing, but I do not understand Korea’s behavior.

There is currently contaminated water containing 860 trillion becquerels of tritium in Fukushima. The contaminated water will be diluted to one-seventh of the drinking water standard set by the WHO and released into the ocean as treated water. The treated water will then be released at less than 22 trillion becquerels per year. It has also been decided that this process will be monitored by the IAEA.

A study by experts commissioned by the South Korean government has clearly stated that there will be no impact on South Korea. South Korean also release contaminated water.  For example,  contaminated water containing 360 trillion becquerels of tritium was released into the ocean or the atmosphere in 2018. Furthermore, South Korea’s Minister of Foreign Affairs said on April 19 that South Korea would not oppose the procedure if it followed IAEA standards. Nonetheless, for some reason they are also against it. South Korea has expressed its approval as well as its disapproval.

Japan and South Korea have many historical problems. South Korea also has a history of increasing its political support by blaming Japan. And recently, political support in South Korea has fallen to its lowest level. I feel that South Korea is just blaming Japan for this problem to raise its political support as well.

These illustrations show how chocolate is produced. This process involves 10 stages beginning with growing cacao trees and ends with the production of liquid chocolate.

The process starts with harvesting the ripe red pods from cacao trees which are grown in South America, Africa and Indonesia.  Afterwards, white cacao beans are extracted from the pods. The beans are then fermented and spread in the sun to dry. Next, the dried beans are put in large sacks, which are transported to a factory by train or lorry. In the factory, the beans are roasted at 350 degrees Celsius and crushed to remove the outer shell. Finally, liquid chocolate is produced by pressing the crushed beans.
